winsxs directory

winsxs directory?

In Vista there was no telnet client installed. I located one in a directory under c:\windows\winsxs, but this does nothing when executed. There appear to be hundreds of directories under winsxs with various utilities in them. What is the purpose of those directories, and how do you get them installed?

Search for winsxs on the Microsoft.com site. I did that recently. Winsxs means Windows side-by-side. That is versions of files that coexist on the system (like .netframework 1.1 and 2.0 can). "Will" wrote in message

In Vista you have to do a workaround to install Telnet: There is a way to install it - Control Panel -> Programs -> Turn on off windows feature -> check telnet client.
If
you type "telnet towels.blinkenlights.nl" (lose quotes) in XP you'll get about 30 minutes of "Starwars" on your cmd prompt rendered in ASCIIcalled an Ascimation (I guess that can survive the Crabby Offie Lady or whomever MSFTies use as their censor). Telnet is default on in XP and many security types quickly point out it the service is a security vulnerability so you should turn it off when not in use for productive things like Starwars.
